Maintains values over self-promotion or profit
Maintaining values over self-promotion or profit is an important competency to meet as an occupational therapy student because there could be moments in the future when my values are tested when there is a chance of promotion or financially benefitting from a third party's kickback. Certainly, these are situations to be aware of in order to avoid being involved with in the future. I am grateful to my professors and fieldwork educators for providing me with ample examples to avoid sabotaging one's values for a short-term gain.
With this insight, I feel that I maintained my values over self-promotion or profit by being respectful and truthful about the Impulse Control Rating Scale System (ICRSS) with my fourth fieldwork site's supervisor. When she came in to talk to me about the ICRSS, I was under the impression she was giving me credit for coming up with the idea to utilize the system. I respected my fieldwork educator, who came up with the idea, and wanted her to receive the praise she deserved for the system. Whether she was actually praising me or not, I didn't want there to be any question that I was trying to promote myself in any way. I respectfully and honestly told my supervisor that my fieldwork educator came up with the idea and should be given full credit for it. I simply implemented it into group like she asked me to. My supervisor agreed. In this instance, I feel that I maintained my values of truthfulness and respect.
